Bamboo as a resource is the most sustainable plant used in the manufacturing of structural and architectural systems. Bamboo in comparison to timber takes 4 years to fully mature, where as timber on average takes 25 to 50 years to mature. Lamboo has 3 times the structural capacity of timber, achieving longer spans which allows for use of less material. Bamboo can be harvested without replanting, due to its root structure and grass like features, which also helps eliminate soil erosion. Unlike other crops, bamboo requires little or no pesticides to grow, because of a natural bio-agent that is bound to the plant at the molecular level.

Lamboo products are manufactured to be formaldehyde free due to adhesive selection as well as processing procedures. There is no comparison as far as yield per acre; bamboo can be harvested at a rate of 14 tons of usable fiber per acre every four to six years. In comparison, 8 tons of usable fiber per acre can be harvested from timber every 25-30 years. Timber is and has been an excellent fiber source, but bamboo is a great alternative source of fiber that cannot be ignored.

Lamboo Inc. has now developed and released a new product within the Lamboo® Design™ series called Lamboo® Ebonized™. This new product, implemented within the music industry, could change the outlook on how manufacturers address the need for sustainable materials within their products. Ebony woods and other exotic hardwoods are commonly used within guitars, basses, pianos, and other musical instruments. Lamboo® Ebonized™ is available in two grain choices, and has already successfully been implemented as a replacement to ebony in different applications. Ebonized products are cured and then processed through a thermal modification process to achieve its rich, deep color. Having a bamboo alternative to these rare woods allows for rapid growth and manufacturing of this product since bamboo can be harvested every 4-6 years, while ebony timber is harvested at a rate of 60-200 years. Ebony is nearly extinct and has an approximate yield of 30%, versus having up to 97% yield with the Lamboo® Ebonized™ products.

Lamboo® Ebonized™ is a great, long-term alternative and possible replacement for the natural exotic woods that have been rapidly depleting within the last decade due to lack of replenishment of these species. Bamboo, classified as a grass, continually grows back naturally when cut down unlike timber species. It is no secret that teak and other exotic woods are the preferred choice for use onboard superyachts. Substitutes and alternatives, despite their friendlier environmental credentials and undeniable performance qualities, are often ignored in favour of more traditional notions of luxury.
